Gamers Uncensored Unapologetic is a very funny movie. I loved it. You'll want to see it too I am sure. If you like stupid funny movies and you are a gamer then you will laugh until you are in pain. If you've played RPG's you'll identify with this movie, laugh, cry and then claim plausible deniability afterward. It is true that if you want to send a message to Hollywood that the millions of gamers support independent artists, then buy this DVD. Once in a while a cult film maker comes along that is just too silly or too gross for the mainstream marketing channels. I can think of similar director's examples such as John Waters, Benny Hill and Kevin Smith. I could see some of the chemistry and engaging camaraderie of the ensemble cast like the Clerks / Dogma phenomenon in this movie. There was the grossness of movies by John Waters like Dirty Shame and the uncomfortable in-your-face dramas of reality television. The songs have that diabolical and catchy song spell the way South Park does with songs like "Everybody Loves Dick".
The movie was full of perfect one liners that I know movie enthusiasts - ok nerds - will enjoy. One that I will be adding to my vocabulary is "I am all out of ass!" With working in the game journalism industry, I too am frequently "all out of ass." I appreciate the new lexicon that the movie provides. In between all the hearty laughs there is plenty of heartfelt and thought provoking dialog that will get any real gamer going.
Watching it a second time gives the additional laughs because you know what all the little subplot hints mean. A good comedy routine always has a great hook for the end that ties in something from the beginning of the story. This movie does that over and over again, rewarding the good listener with one goofy climax after the next. John Heard and Beverly D'Angelo really let their hair down for this low budget movie and practically steal the show with their "laid back" antics. Maybe the actors were all more relaxed by doing a non-Hollywood movie.
The movie goes over the lives of roleplaying gamers in a mock documentary. The plot is that these guys have been playing this Dragons, Nymphs and Dungeons game for 23 years and are about to break a world record. The movie takes a deep, way too invasive look into the pathetic real lives of these guys. If you are a RPG gamer you will appreciate it. There is some quality comedy here, an intuitive script and a very good time.
I give it a 9 out of 10.
The only place to get it though, is at their website. Yes, the movie features "real" actors and actresses. From the Gamers Myspace page Gamers Movie:
Kelly LeBrock, Beverly D'Angelo, John Heard, William Katt, Michael Bell and Richard Blade. The lead actors are from the world of comedy and includes Kevin Kirkpatrick, Dave Hanson, Joe Nieves, Kevin Sherwood and Scott Allen Rinker. Order the DVD now at Buy Gamers Movie Here Shot on 35MM, support the indie film that told the Hollywood studios to go screw themselves! Self-Financed, uncut, unapologetic! Dreamwatch magazine states "A much funnier and meaner Napoleon Dynamite".
