Wanting to dig deeper into the psyche of poker, I called upon the chief editor of Women's Poker Magazine, Maryann Morrison.

What made you decide to start a Women's Poker Magazine? Why focus specifically on women? How many women are playing poker and do you see an increase in growth?

I started Woman Poker Player as I have an interest in profiling the accomplishments of poker players that are women, and heighten the awareness of them.  I originally became involved in the growth of women in poker when I started the WomensPokerClub in 2003.  I wanted to create an atmosphere where women could come and share stories and strategies with other female players, where anything from the most basic of questions to sharing strategies on a more advanced level would be welcome.  It has been remarkable, and one of the best things I have ever done.  The group is extremely supportive of each other, and I have been able to watch women who barely know how to play go out and win many tournaments.  The feeling of accomplishment they get transfers over to other areas in their life.  There is also a very social aspect to poker which many people enjoy and many friendships have been forged in the club.

The reason why I became involved in the encouragement of women and poker, is because of the way women were treated at the tables.  In 2003, I noticed name calling, bullying, and so on from male players.  It is not as much today as there are more women playing now then there was at that time.  A smart player can learn how to take advantage of the different treatment they receive from other players at the table.

Does your magazine focus on tournament play, private play (neighborhood groups), or online play? Which is most popular and where do you see the most growth?

We encompass all poker and feature articles on strategy that can be applied in any type of poker atmosphere.  I feel that online, women are increasing in numbers the fastest and females encompass the most market share percentage.  Many women are new to poker, and the anonymity of online poker is a little less intimidating.  Plus there are freerolls you can play without risking any of your own investment.  These factors mean that online poker is a good way to start for some women.

There is growth overall in the number of women playing, this is especially true in 2005.  The 2005 World Series of Poker ladies main event saw a growth of 400% over participants in 2004.  Many casinos are experiencing a growth in their live games by the female demographic.  Where in 2004 you would see two women in the whole poker room, many report one or two women at each table.

As well home games are becoming more popular.  As mentioned previously these games are mostly a social activity and a form of entertainment among friends.
