The grassroots media phenomenon began with MP3's in the music industry. Soon all media will be delivered in a similar fashion. Much to the chagrin of Hollywood where there is a stranglehold on intellectual properties, new distribution models for films are being employed. On the other hand, Hollywood also seems reluctant to fund the rich amount of new talents that are coming to the film festivals. We viewers seem to get nothing but rehashes of old movies and TV shows from the aging dragoon that is the present motion picture industry.

Gamers Uncensored Unapologetic is new movie about gaming. The writer, producer, director Chris Folino has spent six years working in the video game industry as a video production manager for Interplay and THQ. He has written, edited and shot documentaries, TV spots and trailers for THQ like "Destroy All Humans" and "SpongeBob SquarePants." It did not get picked up by mainstream producers. I have no idea why. It won the best screenplay award at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. It's gotten good reviews, got a great score at EFilm Critic and has been mentioned in Hollywood Reporter. A segment with clips and interviews with the cast is scheduled to air on August 21st on G4 TV's "Electric Playground".

When I heard about this movie, at first I wasn't all that impressed. I saw the trailers which made me laugh - alot. Then I became interested in seeing it to review. Chris Folino was witty, smart and accessible. The movie was written produced and directed as an independent film. In spite of the 'suits' that caused many setbacks, this show went on. Then I heard about Chris' wife and what was happening in her life at the time of the movie shoot at their house, and I knew I had an exclusive story for WG. I wanted talk to Rose Folino the wife of this enterprising renaissance man, and I found a real life story of love, creativity and new birth.

Geek Woman: Are you a gamer? Do you play video games or table top RPG's like Dungeons and Dragons?

Rose Folino: The only games I remember dappling with years ago were the handheld Space Invaders game (whose sound effects I mimicked pretty well as a young girl), and in my mid 20’s, I played tabletop Ms. Pacman. But even with that game, it was my alcoholic beverage that I had a better handle on. I have to admit, though, that I have recently taken a huge step by playing the Scooby Doo game with my daughter on the PC as well as on the Xbox and that’s pretty much how far I can go. I can barely handle a controller. The first time I advanced to another level, I celebrated as if I had won a shopping spree!

In a nutshell, if you want help to win a game, don't offer me the controller or you're guaranteeing yourself a huge loss. I am absolutely NOT a gamer personality I am sorry to say, and people are generally surprised when I tell them. I guess they figure that since Chris has a passion for Dungeons & Dragons and video games that has existed since he was a young boy, he’d be with someone who shared that interest. No luck here, I say! I never even knew what Dungeons and Dragons was until he explained it to me. I couldn’t believe he had been playing it since the age of 8!
