Electra: I started playing the game because my friends played it and were having a good time.
X-quisite: My boyfriend got me started on it and I fell in love with it right away. He introduced to me to a member of his clan that also played with wS, so I started playing with her. I find it a good way to meet a lot of great people.
Peach: I think each girl has a different story about what brought her to DoD. For me, I played first-person shooters with my brothers for years. starting with 007 Goldeneye for N64 and really taking a leap with Perfect Dark on N64. I loved that game! It progressed from there to PC games. I played Counter-strike for 2 years before even trying out Day of Defeat. I joined a server and I liked the gameplay, but more than anything else, the people. A much more mature crowd of people plays DoD compared with the people I encountered in Counter-strike.
Foxy: It interests me the most. I love WWII history, I love the gameplay and the people who play it. Not to mention I met my boyfriend through it and we play quite often. And yes, we see each other in person, every few weeks or so but he's a 3 hour drive away. We've also been playing together (and in a relationship together) for 3 years, and in a way it kind of keeps us going because it gives us something to do together.
Geek Woman: How long has the clan been active?
Bella: 2 years plus. In the early spring we decided to add to our clan by having a Day of Defeat Source division and recently we added CounterStrike Source as well.
Electra: This clan has been active for about two years. But some of us have been playing together longer.
X-quisite: That I know of 2 years.
Geek Woman: Do you play in tournaments? Which ones? How is that going?
Bella: We are active in TPG 3 v. 3 and TPG 6 v. 6. We made it to the finals last season in 6 v. 6 but unfortunately lost that match. We are just about to join the 5v5 detonation maps for CAL for Day of Defeat Source. As well, the CounterStrike Source girls are in CAL.
Electra: We play in TPG league, 6v6 and 3v3. Had a pretty good season this time around.
X-quisite: I played in one tournament for that Halloween 3v3 one. Only one member of the clan had to go. I didn't like it though because I wasn't playing with the girls, I was playing with people I don't know, and the most important thing was that they were guys lol.
Geek Woman: How do male gamers react to "War Sisters?"
Bella: The reaction is far better then it use to be. We still get guys who say we belong in the kitchen but generally there is a very positive reaction. We have a group of guys who provide a lot of support for us through the site, IRC, and just being great guys who respect girl gamers. They also encourage us in many ways.
Electra: Most guys respond nicely. Some want to help with strats or if we are having problems with a particular map they are more than willing to help out. I haven't had a bad response in a long time.
X-quisite: A lot of guys think it's cool because there is a female DoD team, but then when they get beat by us or we are doing really well in a pub or scrim they turn around and are like "What the hell??"
*wS* Kat: I'll give examples of things that acutally happened. The first story is when we scrimmed this clan called Extricate. We were actually complementing each other, things like "NS." Just having fun. Like Rose actually asked one of them for tips about how to guard this one part of the map better on CT side. Which he did, the whole team actually came to our vent after the scrim and hung out. I guess they think we're cool. They also idle our IRC channel #warsisters.
Second thing - we were scrimming another clan which I don't remember the name since this one wasn't as recent. They made such comments as calling us dykes, and other female gamer stereotypes, that I guess that could be taken offensively. Rose kept saying, "Oh my gosh...don't say anything." We played that scrim through, without retorting back. We were not winning. It wasn't like they were working on our egos to wear us down. I dunno why they were doing that. And then at other times there have been like one person from a clan that'll be an ass. But then another clan member will tell them to STFU and play. So you have the mix in any given team.So it's like if you're cool, and you don't care if whether or not you're a girl (avatar sic.), or not a girl. Then of course there's always the guys that ask for your number... I'll admit at first I kinda liked the attention, but now it bugs the hell out of me. So lay off!
