Even though this game is clearly intended for female RPG fans, there is no way to select a female lead character. With the rich amount of fantasy and mysticism that went into the story of this game and its female characters, not making any of them playable is inexcusable. Why is it that one of the few guys in the story is the only one that you get to play? There are many female NPC's such as the Mana Goddess and a few of the spirits. Why aren't any of them playable? But the lack of a female avatar in this game not only does not make sense, it just isn't as fun. If you could pick characters to play as that would have different elemental abilities, like in the DS version of this game, then the game would be more enjoyable and more involving.
Conclusions
Running around smashing everything in sight is fun... for a while. The endless jumping, the weirdly inaccurate camera, and the clunky movement controls take away from the experience. Unfortunately these issues ultimately create frustrations and boredom. The flaws in this game are its' lack of consistency and character development. Gameplay is repetitive and lacks innovation. The idea of starting from square one for every level might have been an innovation, but in practice it just isn't a good idea after all.
Except for those who are true fans of the franchise, little kids, or those who just want a game to hack and slash around in without paying much attention to the character this game might be fine. The lack of ongoing character development doesn't give you a feeling of connection or investment in your character which is counter-productive. The goal of a good game is to immerse you in your avatar's world and this game just doesn't cut it. With several strikes against it Dawn of Mana only gets 4 disappointing glitter balls out of 10.
