Gameplay:

The gameplay was described in the sections above, but basically, it is a player-propelled puzzle using the direction keys. Its very simplicity makes it pleasant and enjoyable. The boards are set up on a grid design, which make it easier to tell if you have pushed the box one square too many. It also makes it easier to plot the solution with the grids. However, if you push a box against a wall to get it out of the way, or put three together, you cannot continue the game and are stuck. While undoing a move is possible, you must catch it immediately to do so. The game does not allow for a wide margin of error. Like Boxworld and some of its counterparts, you can only undo one move, and if you have pushed a box too far in a burst of enthusiasm, you must reset the level and start again. You cannot move up a board set if you cannot solve the puzzle you are working on . Since the web site provides solutions to registered players, that is not a problem. Boxword did not allow you to advance either, and the whole point of a puzzle is to solve it. Once you have solved a board, you can move down and redo a board, which you may wish to do in order to complete it in the least possible number of moves.

The game is larger than its predecessors, taking up most of the screen, and since it is much easier to see and work with, Sokoman is the best version of this classic puzzle game yet.

Enjoyment:

If you do not like puzzle-games, you will not enjoy this game. But if you enjoy puzzles on any level, this game is a must. Solving a level brings a certain sense of satisfaction and solving the whole board set brings a small degree of disappointment that it is over. However, if you set the game aside for a few months, it becomes new again. New boards are being developed by other players all of the time, and you can develop you own boards if you are so inclined.

It is bug-free, most likely because of its simplicity.

Overall Impression:

The purchase price is $12.00 US ($14.50 if you send a cheque, $15.00 if you order by telephone or fax) and it allows you access to world records and new boards. If you do not have a credit card, the site provides a mailing address for cheques and money orders. The code is emailed or mailed to unlock the game. You also become a registered member of Sokoman, which should provide endless hours of enjoyment as you challenge other players from around the world to complete a board in the least amount of moves. Initially, however, if you are new to the game, your challenge will be in solving the puzzle. Completing a board in the least amount of moves will be the least of your worries!

The best version of this classic game yet!

:: Review Roundup

PROS: The game is perfectly designed and pleasant to play. An absolute must for fans of this genre. This version has returned to the simplicity of the original Boxworld by improving the size of the board without taking away from the simplicity of the game.

CONS: The demo version of Sokoman provides 10 levels of difficulty. The only problem with this is that it is not enough. Since there are 162 levels in three board sets, it would seem logical to provide the potential buyer with five boards from each set.
