Back to the Future for Lara CroftTomb Raider's Lara Croft is one of the most enduring figures in video game history. To mark the start of her second decade, publisher Eidos is releasing a "re-working" of the original game. The BBC News has the story.
"She has survived the test of time. Rather like James Bond has had over 40 years in the film business. Lara Croft has had ten years in gaming, and two blockbuster movies." But is re-writing an 11-year-old game the sign of an industry short on original ideas? Mr Livingstone said: "Cinema has shown that film goers like to see sequels or remakes of classics. The first Tomb Raider was a classic. We had requests from people to bring it up to date. We wanted to take all the seminal moments that everyone remembers from the first Tomb Raider and into an enhanced title, using technology from Crystal Dynamics, to make the game we always wanted to."
My problem with her is that they immediately tried to make her a mass market entertainment property, and forgot to fix the games.
Oh cool! I was just telling my Dac that I got the demo from Steam and I've been playing with. She is awesome! And the graphics are astonishing! I jumped through a waterfall and you could see the water dripping off of me! The sceney was just gorgeous, and I love that it seems to be a healthy mix of shooting and puzzle solving.
I'm definitely going to be buying that one in the future. This new old one, too probably. em
I told my mom of the remake of the 1st Tomb Raider, knowing she loves the series and has completed quite a few Tomb Raider games (all except for the Angel of Darkness and Legend), but she wasn't really interested. Too bad, now I'll have to pay the full price myself instead of splitting it.
I played the demo at Gamestop while I was waiting for my friend to close and was a little disturbed at how every so often the camera would zoom in on her face and she would turn and talk directly at the player about the controls or some such with this sly "come hither" expression. It was creepy weird.
I loved the first tomb raider, i have the origonal on sega Saturn, then the next Tr 2 and 3 on PS1.
In fact a few days ago i was browsing around looking for the PC versions, I was in a mood to try TR1 out PC version, cleaner graphics ect.
I just spent 2 hours running around town to find the origonal PC version of tomb raider, no luck....,I thought I might find a TR trilogy somewhere but bleh nothing.
So I decided to dig out Sega Saturn Version (PS1 vers. looked better) MAN is it UGLY and pixelated, of course even worse on a 36' screen,i played awhile remembering this game was the best thing ever, beautiful graphics, ambiant music .....anyhow I'm looking forward to a remake.
Odd, I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm playing it on the PC. Are the games different? My tutorial is little messages that pop up and tell me what I need to do. em
 You and your Sega. Yeah, I found the same thing with Doom and the orignal Command and Conquer games. Although, I've never played C&C so I had no memories to ruin. But the graphics were awful. And Doom! OMG! What the heck did we ever see in that game? em
Something like Doom/Doom 2, even with its old crusty visuals got it right, kind of. When I finished it, I felt great and as though I'd done something good, when I finished Tombraider 2, I just felt dirty like I'd helped make a baby cry or something.
Maybe I should seek out TR3 again? I only rented it briefly first time. Besides the wobbily PS visuals remind me of the old times.
I down loaded the demo today and yes, I saw the water dripping off you. It is a nice looking game ( TR Legends Demo i D/L'd),Ide like to relive the Origonal remake though. One thing kind of bothered me was the swinging camera,I like to Hold right Mouse and control the camera,This kinda of floats with the mouse movement, it works well and kind of intuiative but i found myself twisting and contorting my head to look around , then a vertabrae at the base of my skull broke and my head flopped over and i suffocated because my throat kinked like a garden hose, but ill still probably buy the anniversary version
I thought it was done well. Even though her clothes got darker from being wet, there were no other special effects. You're getting old, dude. Flip your head back up and get over it! Breathing is for the weak. A real gamer wouldn't have complained about it. Hmm, what were you trying to do, Flex, look down her shirt? There wouldn't have been any problems if you just focused on the game and puzzles. em
May have been a different game, although I know the demo I played was a PC demo.
hehe......she always putting me in my place, I guess its back to the ole mirror boots in GW...<flex> Grabs his Windex and frollicks off into the sunset...
