Games Help Parents Bond with Kids

Postby Atari on Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:45 am

Computer games can help parents and grandparents bond with their children and grandchildren, according to new research. Vnunet has the story. (Thanks Geek Woman)

The study commissioned by games developer PopCap Games claims that 92 per cent of casual gaming parents and grandparents say such games provide an opportunity for them to bond with their children/grandchildren. Furthermore, 70 per cent of the parent demographic, or 2,298 respondents, said that they see educational benefits for children in games.

Not specifically computer games, but I know that some of my coolest earliest moments growing up bonding with my mom were playing ms. pac man together. I'm glad that people are seeing games as more than just a "fleeting hobby" with "limited benefits".

Yeah, when I lived with my parents... um... two or three years ago :?: I taught my daddy how to play some games. We played a shooter (don't remember which one) Generals and I got him to play Morrowind. He loved all of them. I even let him win a couple of times so he wouldn't feel so bad that his daughter was kicking his behind. :D

LOL Aww, what a filial child you are Bel, that's awesome :o Does he still play games now? My mom doesn't but she does like to hag out when I play. When I was playing Final Fantasy X and she visited me she got really into it, it was so cute! She wouldn't play herself though, which was poopie, but she did think Auron was hot which was hilarious. Maybe I'll get her an action figure for her b-day...

Oops! Yeah, I meant hanging out. Sorry... That's what I get for trying to post and do several other things at once. I suck today, but at least it's Friday!

Ewww, when I was a kid I probably would have given up video games if my parents wanted to play them with me.

 When I was teenager, yeah. I'm talking when I was 27-28. :)

Yes, he still plays Morrowind. He absolutely loves it. He can't believe how big that place is. He was thinking of upgrading his computer so he can get Oblivion. I bought him the expansions a couple of months ago, so he has somewhere else to go, and I introduced him to user made mods.

He couldn't get something to work right, so I was messing around with it and saw which mods he had; Better Bodies. 79 years old. I'm like, "Daddy, what's up with this? You don't have any clothing mods to go with it." He got embarassed and told me to mind my own business. "Where do you think you came from, little girl?"

I played games with my dad a long while ago when I was a child. It was a lot of fun though :). Nowadays he doesn't have the time.

My father still blames competing with me on the Atari playing Pac Man for raising his blood pressure! :)

We don't play the same kinds of games anymore, though. He still enjoys things like Bubble Ice Age, Bejeweled, and Jewel of Atlantis, but Warcraft would be way too complicated for him, I think. I tried to introduce him to The Sims, thinking it would be a familiar metaphor, but he couldn't get into it. :/

Speaking of games like the aforementioned "little" ones, does anyone have any particular favorites that you'd recommend checking out?

I can't wait until my son is old enough to play. He just turned one but he already LOVES to "play" skate. You should see him, it's so cute!

Why would parents need a bond for their kids? Doesn't insurance already cover that?

Unless you're Michael Lohan in which case you'll be needing a different type of bond for your kid... :P
