Bomb Canada
Developer:
Simon Jansen
A
fun little freebie. I always enjoy games with a sense
of humor, and this one is definitely appealing. The
premise is to bomb the buildings as Stan, a pilot with
a supply of bombs. Bomb enough of them to land so that
you can rescue Wendy, who has been captured by the "evil
Canadians with their beady little eyes and flapping
heads." J Apologies to my Canadian friends, especially
those at BioWare.
Mulg
Developer: Till
Harbaum and Pat Kane
Guide a marble through a maze, avoiding obstacles like
ice, stones and more. I find Mulg difficult to control,
but perhaps that's part of the challenge. If you liked
Marble Madness in the arcades, you might well like Mulg.
Fire
Escape
Developer: Headrush
Used to be shareware, now freeware. I kept thinking
of Ike from South Park while playing this one. "Don't
kick the baby." In this case, you're trying to save
the babies who for some reason are either falling or
being tossed out of a burning building. There's a shareware
version of this that is much better called Fire! It's
listed below. Nicer graphics and more features on that
one, and since the shareware copy never expires (though
I do recommend paying for it - it's only $5), I wouldn't
even mess with the freebie, which has some mildly sexist
overtones. Some of their other products are better.

Tank
Commander
Developer: Gary
Lorensen
This one I downloaded especially in honor of Cat91,
since I know she's a fan of sims. It's not a flight
sim, but this was as close as I could find. Fairly simple:
use the stylus to indicate the direction you want your
tank to go in: collect more ammo as you blow up trucks,
shoot down airplanes, helicopters, and other enemy craft.
RayGin
Developer: Steve
Minns
Used to be shareware, now freeware. The only 3D action
game available for the Palm Pilot. It has received praise
from some, but I was incredibly frustrated by the lack
of precision with the button controls. They were far
too sensitive, and I could find no way to tweak them.
Invariably, I overshot my mark, to the point that I
could barely make it through the first door. Utterly
frustrating. Try it if you simply must have the closest
thing to a Quake-like experience for the Palm, but it's
still quite a far cry from that. As I understand it,
the game is still in development at this time.
Squeeze
the Ants
Developer: Alfons
Grabher
Very simple, rather boring. I found myself killing the
hornets just to end the game. It's too easy. One amusing
note - it does allow you to enter your high score, and
lists the ant kills as "frags." But hey, it's free.
Shareware
Booty
Developer: Megasoft,
$10.00
I wasn't really taken with this one. It has nice graphics,
but it's rather hard to control, and frankly it's not
exciting. You're supposed to go around a pirate ship
collecting keys and avoiding hazards in an attempt to
gather treasure and escape, but the write-up is more
exciting than the actuality.

Emerald
Hunt
Developer: Evolutionary
Systems, $7.00
You control a bulldozer, trying to retrieve emeralds
and diamonds while avoiding getting squashed by stones
or blown up by bombs. Shareware version has a time delay
on loading. Retrieve goodies, avoid obstacles. The graphics
are simple, but decent. I didn't find it terribly engaging,
but it might be your cup of tea - download and try it.
A color version is available.

Fire!
Developer: Astraware,
$5.00
I rather like this one. Save children from a burning
building. Several difficulty levels, a high score board,
nice graphics. True, the "pay for your shareware" nag
messages get a bit annoying, but you can get rid of
them by sending the folks $5. It's worth it. Nice little
game that's also available in color.
Herdin
Catz
Developer: Notions
Software $10.00
Cute, but definitely not easy. You (theoretically) push
the cats into the corral with your stylus. Easy in theory,
difficult in practice. They're not like sheep. They
don't go easily. I suspect you could scratch up your
Palm screen a bit with this one. If you get too frustrated,
you might try to punch a hole in your Palm with the
stylus.
