Arcade Games

Freeware

Gobble
Developer: Mobile Generation Software
Pac Man is an all-time favorite of mine, and I really wish this knock-off of it for the Palm were better than it is. It was slow on my machine, even in "Ooh, That's Fast" mode, and it's just not as maneuverable as it should be. It's freeware, so you can try it for yourself to see if it works better for you. Be forewarned about the link - I couldn't find gaming software anywhere on this site, even though it's the one listed in the game's Read Me. Go to EuroCool to get it, as I couldn't find it on Mobile Generation's site at the time of this writing.

Invaders
Developer:
Mobile Generation Software
Invaders is a decent remake of the arcade classic Space Invaders. I wish you could remap the keys: the defaults are fine for right handers, but lefties might prefer to reverse them, and we can't. It crashed on me a few times, but it's still fun. A warning about the link - I couldn't find gaming software anywhere on their site, even though this is the one listed in the game's Read Me. Go to EuroCool to get the game, as I couldn't find it on the developer's site at the time of this writing.

Nibbles
Developer:
Hector C. Abril
A simple, straightforward game. You start with a small snake and guide it around the board eating numbers. The more numbers, the longer your snake becomes. Obstacles include walls and other snakes. It's more challenging than it sounds, but there are more interesting games for the Palm than this one.

Shareware

MunchMan
Developer:
Stand Alone, Inc. $10.00
Only works for 30 days, then you have to register, but it's worth your consideration. This is a much better Pac Man clone than Gobble. You may also want to look at PalmPac before deciding.

Centipede
Developer:
PalmKidz, $5.00
You may want to grab this one quickly since the site is "offline because Hasbro is unhappy." Shareware version gives you one life. Had a little trouble getting this one to run, but worth the effort. A good adaptation of the arcade classic.

Froggy
Developer:
Rakson Computer Ltd., $10.00
A good adaptation of the arcade classic Frogger. Full version has more levels. Megasoft also makes a Frogger adaptation called Frogs and Cars, but Froggy is more consistent with the original game.

Galax
Developer:
Rakson Computer Ltd., $10.00
A re-creation of the arcade classic Galaxian. I wasn't really taken with the default key controls for this game - they seemed quite inconsistent. You can adjust them in the game's Preferences section, but the game still seemed to run quite slowly.

PalmPac
Developer:
Horace Ho, $10.00
This one is probably the Pac Man for the Palm that is truest to the original arcade version. However, the black and white version is harder to see than MunchMan. My recommendation would be that if you have a color machine and want authenticity, go with PalmPac, otherwise, go with MunchMan. Since they're the same price, you're spending the same amount of money either way. I do like the customizable key preferences on this one. It also features a high score board.

Astroids
Developer:
Astraware, $7.95
Decent adaptation of the arcade hit with some nice features, and no, the name is not a typo. High score board, adjustable controls, tweakable display settings and ship settings are just some of the options in this Palm game. Not sure that it's worth nearly eight bucks, but if you're an Asteroids fan, go for it.

9-Ball Pinball
Developer:
Landware, $14.95
Definitely the nicest, highest-quality, most feature-rich pinball simulation for the Palm out there. Unfortunately, that isn't enough: many have complained about the frustratingly unrealistic physics in the game. It is available in color, but probably only hardcore pinball wizards should have this on their Palm, and they should certainly try before purchasing.

Sabotage
Developer:
Seimitsu Software, $5.00

Shoot down the parachuting saboteurs and keep them from entering your building. Yep, that's about it. The registered version allows you to save high scores and options, and to start at any level you previously reached. It's a little too basic to have a great deal of appeal, in my opinion. Based on an old Apple II game of the same name.

Ted-Truss
Developer:
Arcosoft, $11.99
It's a Tetris clone. Some of the shadings of the pieces make it a bit confusing to look at the layers in the game. It's fine, but somehow I'd like to see better. It is available in color now, so that might make it worth the money, but then again it might not. The whole interface seems very sparse. If you're dying to play Tetris on your Palm, this will do, but it's nothing to write home about. There are better versions available.

Zap! 2000
Developer:
Astraware, $5.00
Quite a fun little space shooter, heir apparent to Galaga and that sort, but not quite like them. Nice graphics, and it's available both in color and in grayscale. Great for when you're just in the mood to blast something. They also make Astroids, but this one is really much nicer, and it's cheaper, too. Since their Astroids page is down right now, I get the impression that they might be retweaking it to match the quality of the rest of their line. I think I'm starting to like this little development house, and look forward to seeing more nice, simple, reasonably-priced products from them.

Banshee's Pick for Best Arcade:
Zap! 2000

Runner-up:
Invaders
